Newcastle United supporters have been pretty deflated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days, what with their side bowing out of the FA Cup on Sunday, and then missing out on the signing of striker Daniel Sturridge on Monday.
Rafa Benitez’s men booked their place in the fourth round of the world’s oldest club competition after beating Luton Town 3-1 earlier this month, but they were knocked out on Sunday after going down 3-0 to Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And their misery was further compounded on Monday as reports suggested that the Magpies were closing in on a deal to sign Liverpool’s Sturridge, only for West Brom to steal a march and confirm the 28-year-old on loan until the end of the season.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and angry Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side do indeed bring new additions into the club before this evening’s 11pm deadline.
Yet one man who could be leaving at some stage today is midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who is reportedly on West Ham’s radar once again after a month of reported interest in his services from David Moyes’ men.
And while the 25-year-old hasn’t quite been at his best so far this season, the Magpies simply cannot succumb to the Hammers’ advances, as doing so could turn out to be one of their biggest transfer mistakes in many a year.
Ultimately, both Newcastle and West Ham are in a relegation scrap, with the Hammers just three points clear of Benitez’s side in the division, who are in turn just a point clear of 18th place Southampton.
Thus, the Magpies simply cannot afford to let a player like Shelvey, who has the ability to produce match-winning moments in games, go this month, let alone to a side who may well be battling the North East giants for 17th place come the end of the season.
Doing so would weaken Newcastle and seriously strengthen West Ham – can one imagine if Shelvey scored the goal on the last day of the season which kept the Hammers up at the expense of Newcastle? It’s perfectly plausible that it could happen were this deal to take place at some stage today.
Yes, Shelvey hasn’t quite been at his best in recent times and his disciplinary record is a worry, but the England international proved in the early stages of the season that he is exactly the sort of player one needs in a relegation battle, as he can produce the star quality required to win matches.
And they would be giving that potential match-winning nous to West Ham, in a move which could well have serious repercussions in Newcastle’s quest to avoid the drop.
Ultimately, this Magpies side is hovering above the relegation zone now even with Shelvey at the football club – take the influential ace out of the side, and relegation becomes an even greater possibility.
Which is why succumbing to West Ham on the final day of the window is something they simply cannot do, or they risk potentially making one of their biggest transfer mistakes for many a year.
