Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the past week or so after seeing their team get the better of Manchester United 1-0 in their previous Premier League clash to move up to 13th in the division.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with the Red Devils off the back of drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace, a result which extended their winless league run to four matches, and indeed saw them slip into the bottom three prior to kick-off last weekend. Yet the Magpies produced an inspired performance to deservedly beat Jose Mourinho’s side, with Matt Ritchie’s effort midway through the second half enough to clinch a massive three points for Benitez’s side, thus moving them two points clear of danger with 11 matches of the campaign remaining.
Thus, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in the last few days, and they are likely to be further intrigued by a recent report from Fotomac, which suggests that a summer bid is in the offing from their club for reported long-term target Garry Rodrigues.
The 27-year-old winger currently plays his trade at Turkish giants Galatasaray and has done so since January of last year, in which time he has gone on to score seven goals and lay on ten assists in 44 appearances.
Five goals and seven assists of which have come this term in a fine campaign from the Cape Verde international, and Newcastle have reportedly been keeping tabs on the 27-year-old in recent times as they seek to bolster their attacking ranks.
The Magpies reportedly had a bid rejected during the winter window, and recent reports suggest that the North East giants are set to up the ante by making another bid at the end of this season as they hope to finally get their man.
But whether it will be enough to convince Galatasaray to sell the influential winger very much remains to be seen.
No deal materialised though to leave the 27-year-old at Galatasaray, but reports suggest that the Magpies will try their hand again in the summer with an improved bid, as manager Rafa Benitez eyes up reinforcements ahead of what they hope will be another season in the Premier League.
But whether Newcastle can indeed stump up the cash to lure Rodrigues away from the Turkish giants remains to be seen.
