Summer departure of Man City’s £99m-rated lynchpin would destroy Guardiola’s CL ambitions

The Manchester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been waxing lyrical about the performances of Kevin De Bruyne all season long, but recent reports have given them cause for concern about his long-term future at the Etihad.

Man City’s baby faced midfield maestro has stolen plenty of plaudits this season for his complete displays for the club. From the centre of City’s midfield De Bruyne (valued at £99 million by Transfermarkt) has offered the club just about everything, and the quality of his performances have played an instrumental role in their domination of the Premier League.

However, performances of that level of consistency and quality are bound to draw attention from some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs, and De Bruyne is no exception to the rule according to the Manchester Evening News. The report claims that Real Madrid are interested in signing De Bruyne, as well as John Stones, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling in the summer, but City are set to sternly refuse any forthcoming approaches from the current Champions League holders.

City have done an excellent job of keeping their best players throughout their transition from a sub-standard Premier League side to one which now has genuine claims of being held in the same bracket as Europe’s elite, but that cannot continue forever, especially if Madrid claim their third straight Champions League victory this season.

Pep Guardiola will undoubtedly have a huge task on his hands in convincing all four of the aforementioned players to remain at the club, but De Bruyne is the man they simply cannot afford to lose this summer. Without De Bruyne City would be missing the crucial cog which plays a key role in enabling the club to control and dominate matches both domestically and in Europe, so Guardiola must do everything in his power to convince him to remain at the Etihad.

The Citizens have enjoyed a marvellous campaign and arguably the greatest in their history this season. Although plenty of individual players deserve singling-out for praise, it’s fair to say that De Bruyne’s performances have been the most fundamental to City’s success, and without him their dream of lifting the Champions League next season will be left in a cloud of dust.
