Sunderland ace set for shock departure?

sessegnon.jpgSunderland fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern have been left somewhat shocked by the news emerging from Simon Bird of the Daily Mirror, who reckons Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio is happy to sell star attacker Stephane Sessengnon this summer.

The Benin forward is regarded as one of the brightest talents at the Stadium of Light, but Di Canio is hoping to recoup around £8 million from his sale to fund his rebuilding process at the club.

Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is set to complete an £11 million move to Liverpool this week, meaning the Italian coach should have funds available to rebuild should the Sessegnon move come off too. Elsewhere, club captain Lee Cattermole is also a £4 million target for Premier League new boys Hull City managed by former Mackems boss Steve Bruce.

Di Canio is taking something of a gamble by allowing Sessegnon to follow Mignolet out the club, but Sunderland owner Ellis Short has told Di Canio he has his trust in the rebuilding process.

The Sunderland manager spoke last season of wanting to make wholesale changes, and being dissapointed with the squad he had inherited from Martin O’Neill.

Sessegnon is a popular figure at the Stadium of Light, but being one of the few players than can command a hefty transfer fee, and his desire to return to France for family reasons, has seen Di Canio give the green light for a move away.

Will Sessegnon make a summer exit from Wearside? Would you stump up £8 million for his services? Rate this rumour below.
