There have been some raised voices amongst the Sunderland fans loitering around the fruit machines after The Daily Mail suggested that Steven Fletcher could be about to bail from the Black Cats’ relegation battle.
The striker’s contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and was unlikely to receive an extension, with Celtic reportedly lining up a pre-contract agreement to take him back to his native Scotland.
However, whilst Sunderland supporters were expecting him to depart the club in the summer, the word being passed around the busy queue for the gents toilet is that Fletcher could be about to make an imminent move to Shanghai Shenhua.
The 28-year old has netted 4 goals this term, but his head has apparently been turned by the Chinese club’s wealth and could be set to earn a lucrative contract offer.
A deal for the Scottish forward would see him follow in the footsteps of former Chelsea striker Demba Ba and ex-Everton star Tim Cahill, whilst Shenhua are also in negotiations with Sunderland’s rivals Newcastle regarding an £8 million move for Cheick Tiote.
One punter in the Transfer Tavern suggests that Sunderland should capitalise on Shenhua’s interest and cash in while they can on Fletcher, who has netted 23 times in 86 Premier League appearances since he joined back in 2012.
Sunderland fans, how disappointed would you be if Fletcher ditched your club at this stage given your current situation? Let us know in the comments below!
