The Brentwood Gazette is reporting that Sunderland have joined West Ham United in the race to sign Queens Park Rangers forward Charlie Austin.
Sunderland, who were yesterday linked with a move for Derby County striker Chris Martin, are looking for more firepower up front as they look to escape the Premier League relegation zone.
Sam Allardyce is a big admirer of Austin and it is thought that he, along with Martin, are at the top of his list. Allardyce would have to free up some funds to make either deal happen and that could mean January exits for either Jermain Defoe or Steven Fletcher.
Austin is a proven striker at Premier League level would guarantee goals for the side, and with so much at stake going into next season with the new TV deal the main objective is to stay in the Premier League.
The Sunderland fans in The Transfer Tavern are not convinced that Austin would join the club to be part of another relegation battle following him being relegated with Queens Park Rangers last season.
