Sunderland fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern have ordered a pint to toast the imminent arrival of Paolo Di Canio’s first signing, courtesy of sources at the Sunderland Echo.
Di Canio is reported to have agreed a deal to bring Lazio centre half Modibo Diakite to the Stadium of Light when his contract expires at the end of next month.
The 26-year-old is set to leave the Italian giants on a Bosman having let his contract run down, and it appears Sunderland have won the race for his signature.
The 6 ft 4 in defender has been a Serie A regular throughout his career, making an impressive 83 appearances for Lazio since joining the club in 2006.
He fell out of favour this season however after injury, which persuaded the defender to look for a new club at the end of his contract.
New Sunderland boss Di Canio knows the Italian market well, and will consider the signing an astute purchase. Sunderland’s manager has spoken of wanting to make a dramatic overhaul of playing staff at the club, and Diakite looks set to be the first player to arrive after his agent said: “If they call us, we would be honoured to speak with them.”
Since then a deal appears to have been reached, with Diakite set to be plying his trade with the Black Cats next season.
