Sunderland plot move for ex-Premier League enforcer

scharner.jpgWith their North East neighbours so busy in the transfer market, some Sunderland fans have started growing restless in the Football Transfer Tavern, but Chris Young of local paper The Shields Gazette reckons the club may be about to do some transfer business of their own.

Martin O’Neill is thought to be lining up a move for former West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic midfielder Paul Scharner, and is hoping to sign the Austrian on loan until the end of the season.

Scharner is currently plying his trade for Bundesliga outfit Hamburg , although reports emerging from Germany suggest he is set to make a quick return to the Premier League, despite only departing in the summer.

Scharner penned a lucrative two-year deal with Hamburg in the summer, but has only managed four appearances for the German club due to injury and two red cards.

O’Neill is set to offer him a route back to the Premier League where Scharner has played for the best part of his career, serving both Wigan and West Brom before his summer switch.

Scharner said: “There is interest from a Premier League club and in the coming days, it will be made concrete.

“As a professional you want to play. I have not had a lot of opportunities here so of course, this is interesting to me.”

It is set to be a busy last few days of the transfer window for Sunderland, with O’Neill also linked with a move for ex-Everton man Tim Cahill on loan after the Black Cats already snared Alfred N’Diaye and Kader Mangane so far this January.
