‘Jack who?’ is the question most supporters are asking in the Football Transfer Tavern when the Daily Mail announces who Sunderland have opened talks with regarding a possible summer transfer.
Jack Rodwell is the answer and for those of you who don’t remember, he is the talented former Everton midfielder who has hardly featured since moving to the Etihad Stadium two years ago.
Gus Poyet is confident he is the man to revive the 23-year-old’s career and talks are underway to discuss a deal that would see Rodwell make the switch to the north east.
Rodwell was understood to have travelled up to the Stadium of Light today to discuss personal terms after City gave the go-ahead for the move – despite the Premier League champions lack of homegrown players.
Rodwell managed just 10 appearances in all competitions for City last season and has failed to make any sort of impression on Manuel Pellegrini.
In fact, Rodwell has managed just seven Premier League starts since signing for the club in the summer of 2012.
But Poyet remains hopeful he can help the midfielder rediscover the form that saw him labeled one of the most exciting talents in the country, during his time at Everton.
If signed, Rodwell would become the Black Cats’ fifth summer signing after Billy Jones, Costel Pantilimon, Jordi Gomez and Patrick van Aanholt.
