The Daily Mail are reporting that Sunderland are leading the chase for 22 year old Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson. The left sider has been one of the best players in the Championship this season which has led to rumours of a move to a number of Premiership clubs, including title challengers Chelsea, and Steve Bruce’s Sunderland are right up there.
Johnson’s contract is set to expire this summer and, despite belief that he’ll sign it, Middlesbrough will be very worried about the prospect of losing the former England Under 21 midfielder on a free which will lead to them accepting bids for Johnson’s services for a fee of around £5 million.
Sunderland are enjoying a good season in the Premiership having made a number of top signings in the summer and will be hoping to push for a surprise European spot this year. The left wing spot is one of their weaker positions though and Johnson is seen as the ideal signing for Steve Bruce.
Johnson has been viewed as one of Boro’s top youth prospects for a few years now and was even linked to Real Madrid last year. His performances in the Championship have been of top quality and he’s proving to be quite a goalscorer from midfield which would offer Sunderland another source of firepower to aid Darren Bent in leading the charge for Europe.
