Sunderland turn down move for Liverpool defender

Liverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern weren’t too happy when they heard that Mamadou Sakho might be leaving this summer; and now he could be set for an Anfield stay after Sunderland passed on an offer to bring him to The Stadium of Light.

It has been a strange few months for Liverpool centre-half Mamadou Sakho.

In April he was removed from Liverpool team selection after testing positive for a banned substance, before the ruling was dismissed in July.

As a result of the issue, Sakho not only missed the end of the season, but also this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament in his native France – which he seemed likely to be a part of.

Fast forward several months, and Sakho is woefully unfit after not playing for nearly 5 months – and therefore unlikely to play a role with the first-team for the foreseeable future.

With that in mind, it was reported by the Daily Mail that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was keen for Sakho to leave the club this summer, albeit on a temporary deal – in order to gain more fitness.

The Merseyside locals here in the Football Transfer Tavern haven’t been able to wrap their head around the deal with the defender finally finding his form before his suspension – and Liverpool are not blessed with defensive strength.

Whilst Klopp may be keen for Sakho to move on, Reds fans may get their wish this summer – with Sunderland reportedly rejecting a move (according to the Daily Mail), with Liverpool keen for David Moyes’ side to take the defender on loan this season.

Whilst he agrees that Sakho should stay at Anfield this year, our landlord is equally baffled that Sunderland haven’t taken Liverpool up on the offer!

It would seem that David Moyes has forgotten just how good Sakho is, so let us remind you…

On his day there are very few defenders better than Sakho – our landlord thinks that Moyes has missed a trick here…

Liverpool fans – what do you think? Should Sakho stay or go? Sunderland fans – Has David Moyes made a mistake here?
