Though it has been a week of celebration for the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, thoughts must now turn back to the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
They still have a lot to play for in the English top flight, and whilst they could secure Champions League football on the basis of winning the competition this term, they can’t take their progression beyond the semi-finals for granted.
Between now and the end of the season, then, every league game is important, and next up for the Reds is a clash with Bournemouth. The Cherries have proven that they’re not pushovers this season, and so Liverpool will need to be at the top of their game.
Fortunately, Liverpool will welcome back Jordan Henderson this weekend after his suspension in Europe, and given that he’s the club captain, most are anticipating that he will come back into the side.
However, who he will return for remains to be seen, and whilst Georginio Wijnaldum may be the most likely candidate, it’s clear that Liverpool fans aren’t in agreement on the prospect of him dropping back down to the bench this weekend.
We recently asked Liverpool fans whether the Dutchman should be dropped this weekend, and it’s fair to say that there is a real sense of division in the responses. It was a fairly even 52/48 split between fans, with neither option proving to be unanimously accepted by supporters.
To be fair to Wijnaldum, his performance against Man City in the week was fantastic, and so he definitely doesn’t deserve to lose his place. That said, Henderson was great in the first leg and against Everton, and so he deserves to play too.
It’s fair to say that nobody in the Transfer Tavern is envying Jurgen Klopp as he looks to select his team this weekend. Whoever he picks, there are likely to be some disappointed Liverpool fans.
