Per Metesacker has issued a come and get me plea to Arsenal according to the Daily Mail fuelling speculation of a move to the Emirates.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of the giant defender who could now move to North London after expressing his desire to play in the Premier League.
The 6ft 6ins tall German is exactly what Arsenal need to shore up their leaky back-line and the defender is excited at the prospect of playing in England.
He said: “For a national player it is a good thing to get experience of playing abroad.
“I have said that England excites me.”
26-year-old Mertersacker is available on a free transfer next season, which could tempt current club Werder Bremen into cashing in on him with sporting director Klaus Allofs admitting that he could leave the Bundesliga side.
He said: “Should Per say that he wants to try something different and it is interesting for us, then we will sit down together. We have enough defenders.”
Wenger has been hunting a new centre-back all summer with moves for other targets Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka also being touted.
That search is certain to be kicked up a notch after Thomas Vermaelen suffered another injury against Benfica at the weekend.
