Survival achieved: Now Newcastle must land 2 key players to avoid relegation next season

The Newcastle United supporters have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s brilliant form in recent weeks.

Rafa Benitez’s side have steered clear of a relegation scrap in recent weeks with a level of conviction which suggests they could finish inside the top-ten next season. Newcastle have taken 18 points from 9 games since they lost to Manchester City at home in January to move into 10th place with 5 matches left to play.

Plenty of the Magpies faithful propping up our bar in the tavern have cited Benitez’s brilliance as a key reason for their club’s success in recent months, but the arrival of both Kenedy and Martin Dubravka in January should be regarded as another core explanation. The aforementioned pairing have only arrived on short-term loans from Chelsea and Sparta Prague respectively, but their impact has been phenomenal in a short space of time.

Kenedy has injected pace, creativity and end-product to a side who looked almost completely devoid of ideas during the first half of the season, whilst Dubravka has been consistently reliable and a calming influence between the sticks. Although Newcastle will almost certainly face rival interest for both of the loanees in the summer, the club should do everything they can to turn their temporary deals into permanent ones.

It’s no coincidence that Newcastle’s results have improved significantly since they secured loan deals for Kenedy and Dubravka in January, so if the club wish to avoid facing another relegation battle next season they must ensure they remain at St James’ Park.

With Benitez at the helm and the prospect of a summer takeover on the horizon, a bright future is looking increasingly more plausible for the Toon Army and, the permanent arrival of two of Newcastle’s most consistent performers of late would certainly do wonders for their prospects of making an unlikely push for a top-seven finish next season.
