Newcastle need a new striker and they need to sign one quickly if they are going to have any chance of a good season next year.
Ever since Newcastle missed out on signing Alassane Plea, the club have been linked with a host of strikers. In recent weeks the club have been linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon. Now the Daily Mail are reporting that West Brom and Newcastle are interested in a swap deal involving Dwight Gayle and Salomon Rondon.
With Rondon’s deal running out next year, the reports states that Newcastle’s previous loan approach for the striker would require Rondon extending his contract or Newcastle agreeing on a fee at the end of his deal.
With Mike Ahsley’s tendency for cheap deals, it was never likely that the owner would pay the £16.5 million release clause.
While it’s understandable that the club is targeting a move for a striker with Premier League experience, Rondon isn’t exactly the 30 goal a year the club need. Since his arrival in the Premier League, Rondon has never wowed and only scored seven goals in the Premier League last season
However, in fairness, Dwight Gayle has never been a regular goalscorer either. The former Crystal Palace player scored six goals in 35 games last season and is simply not cut out to be a Premier League forward.
If Newcastle can swap Gayle for Rondon, that’d be a good piece of business as long as the club continued to hunt for another more reliable forward.
