The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are dismayed with the team’s recent form and are hoping that things turn around sooner rather than later – otherwise a relegation battle could beckon.
In order to reverse their slide down the Premier League table, Southampton will need to dip into the transfer market this January and improve their squad. Too many players are underperforming for the South Coast outfit this season and some fresh faces would add competition for places.
One position they have been forced to consider is centre back. Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt are now sharing those responsibilities after Virgil Van Dijk finally completed his long-anticipated move to Liverpool.
To address the problem at centre-half, Southampton should revisit a move for a key summer target. Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson is playing below his level in the Championship and is certainly worth a punt for any Premier League side.
The towering 6ft 5in Sweden international might want to remain at Leeds and help fight for promotion but he may also be tempted to join the Saints with the prospect of top-flight football up for grabs. His physical power, aerial presence and dominance at the back would certainly help Southampton to shore things up and stop conceding so many goals.
At the age of 26 as well, Jansson is just starting to enter the prime of his career and Southampton could get many years out of the former Malmo and Torino man. While Leeds will try to resist any bids Southampton throw their way, the Premier League outfit can surely make a tempting offer with some of the money received from selling Van Dijk.
