Another disappointing season has been witnessed at the Emirates, with the pressure again seemingly being put on long-term manager Arsene Wenger. However, Gunners fans in the Transfer Tavern have become disheartened at the goalkeeping situation at the club after seeing Wojciech Szczesny’s rise to prominence at Juventus.
Another season without Champions League football looms at the Emirates stadium unless they can find Europa League success and overcome a tricky semi-final against Atletico Madrid. With the worst away form in the top four English leagues since January picking up 0 points, it has seen the Gunners drop to sixth place just two points above Burnley in the race for the final Europa League spot.
Throughout the season, criticism has been aimed the way of four-time Premier League winner Petr Cech who saved his first Arsenal penalty at the sixteenth time of asking in March as he helped his side to a 3-0 win over Watford. However, since his move across London the 35-year-old has struggled to replicate the form that saw him labelled as one of the best ‘keepers in the world at Chelsea.
A new long-term number one is needed at the Emirates and Bayer Leverkusen stopper Bernd Leno fits the profile perfectly to become the man to replace the void that hasn’t been filled since the Jens Lehmann era. The 26-year-old has been in sparkling form for Leverkusen this season and has been rumoured to leave the BayArena according to Gazzetta dello Sport, via talkSPORT.
With 11 clean sheets from 41 games this season Leno will be looking to step up his claim for Germany number one with Manuel Neuer struggling to overcome his injury problems. A ‘keeper who is as comfortable with his feet as is hands, whilst commanding his area as well as being a superb shot-stopper he would be perfect for Arsenal. Valued at £16.20m by Transfermarkt it would be a steal for the Gunners in what is a vital summer at the Emirates if the side are going to get back into the Champions League.
