The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were not surprised when Daniel Sturridge was linked with an Anfield exit earlier this week. The Mirror suggested that the Englishman was ready to call time on his faltering career at Liverpool in an effort to secure a place on the plane to Russia next summer, with Sturridge clearly keen to represent his country once again.
He, of course, has rarely featured so far this term, having suffered through a plethora of injury and form issues, whilst Jurgen Klopp’s lack of faith in him has also seen him miss out despite recently regaining his fitness. He has made 193 Premier League appearances during his time in England, but comparatively few of those have come under the current Liverpool boss at Anfield.
Now, though, a departure looks unlikely, at least judging by a few recent comments by the German boss. According to the Mirror, Klopp has told Sturridge: “You’re going nowhere”.
Discussing his role with the team, Klopp also said: “We have so many games to go until then and we need all of them [the players]”.
Klopp clearly still views Sturridge as having a role to play within the Reds’ first team, and it’s fair to say that he’s not wrong. Klopp doesn’t have many options on which to call upon going forward, with Roberto Firmino the only real alternative to Sturridge.
That said, the Englishman hasn’t been trusted to lead the line much at all this term, and so if that doesn’t change, his anger is only going to grow – and then Klopp will have a problem.
If Sturridge is fit and healthy, he’s undoubtedly Klopp’s best option in the attack.
However, his unreliable fitness record and lack of recent form has left the German no choice but to drop him, and now it’s up to Sturridge to prove his worth.
A few goals against Sevilla tonight may make it hard for Klopp to ignore him.
