Tottenham supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose 4-1 at Premier League leaders Manchester City on Saturday, a result which saw the North Londoners slip out of the division’s top four.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Citizens off the back of beating both Stoke City and Brighton, but they were no match for Pep Guardiola’s side in the North West on Saturday evening. A brace from Raheem Sterling as well as strikes from Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne secured a comprehensive victory for the hosts, with Christian Eriksen’s late effort nothing more than a mere consolation for a Spurs side utterly outplayed at the Etihad Stadium, and now outside of the top four following Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth on Sunday.
Subsequently, there have been many deflated Spurs fans in the Tavern this week, although their mood is likely to be improved by a recent report from Turkish-Football (via talkSPORT), which outlines that Pochettino’s side have spoken to Cenk Tosun’s father about a possible move for his son in the near future.
The 26-year-old striker currently plays his trade at Turkish giants Besiktas and has done so since 2014, in which time he has 63 goals in just 140 matches to help the club to back-to-back Super Lig titles, as well as to the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.
And the Turkey international’s wonderful form in front of goal has reportedly attracted the attention of several sides around the continent, not least Pochettino’s Spurs, who have reportedly sought to seize the initiative in the chase by speaking to Tosun’s father Mesut about a move for his son.
And with Tosun’s father reportedly having said that his son is interested in a move to England in the summer, it remains to be seen exactly what the future holds for the 26-year-old.
Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun has been one of the most in-form strikers in Europe in the last 18 months or so, with his tally of 13 goals so far this term adding to the 24 he bagged last season in Besiktas’ title-winning campaign.
Unsurprisingly, this incredible goal-scoring form has attracted the interest of several sides in the last few months, notably Newcastle United, Everton, and Tottenham, and the latter two have reportedly held talks with the player’s father in recent times in a bid to seek pole position in the chase.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are clearly seeking to bolster their attacking ranks in a bid to lighten the expectations on Harry Kane, yet the player’s father has reportedly informed the club that his son will not move until the summer.
And while that sets them up with a chance to land Tosun later down the line, that doesn’t necessarily help Pochettino with his January plans.
