Talks held: Tottenham ‘confident’ of securing first major transfer of the month

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed by their side’s lack of action this month. The Lilywhites have yet to make a major signing so far this term, which is a surprise given their current league position.

They’re currently sat just outside of the Champions League places, and they’ve found consistently solid form hard to come by so far this term. As such, Mauricio Pochettio could likely do with a few new faces as he looks to bring forward yet another Premier League title challenge.

Fortunately, it appears as though a new face could be forthcoming, though there is a catch for the Lilywhites. According to Football Insider’s Peter O’Rourke, Tottenham are ‘close’ to finalising a deal for Bordeaux midfielder Malcom, with the attacking midfielder impressing in France at present. However, significantly, a loan back to the French side for the rest of the season is likely to be included within the transfer – meaning that he won’t turn out at Wembley this season.

A move for Malcom, on the surface, makes a lot of sense. He has really looked good this season, impressing with his trickery, technique, goalscoring threat and presence going forward. When you consider the mixed form of both Dele Alli and even Christian Eriksen this season, a move makes sense.

Whether leaving his arrival until the summer is a good or bad call remains to be seen, and if this deal progresses as this report dictates, it will surely be a topic of major discussion amongst our resident Lilywhites. That being said, Malcom is a popular player in the pub, and so his signing – if it happens – would no doubt be celebrated.

Landlord’s Verdict

A move for Malcom makes sense for Tottenham. They’re lacking offensive depth, and the Brazilian would likely really improve under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino.

Whilst he could do a job in the Premier League this season, returning him to France for the time being makes sense too. He wouldn’t yet be a starter at Spurs, and at 20-years-old, regular football is essential.

Either way, if this report rings true, Tottenham will be landing quite the player.
