Talks held with 28-year-old as Newcastle eye up January deal – report

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern over the international break such was their side’s two defeats prior to the fortnight interruption, yet they are all fully focused on their return to Premier League action against Manchester United on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a fine start to the new season upon promotion to the top-flight, having won four of their opening nine matches, but successive 1-0 defeats to Burnley and Bournemouth has given our resident Magpies fans much to ponder during the two-week break for internationals. And it doesn’t get much easier for the North East giants as they face a daunting trip to Jose Mourinho’s United on Saturday, with Benitez’s side going in search of their first win at Old Trafford since 2013.

Thus, there have been many glum Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet they may be encouraged by a recent report from Turkish.Football (via The Newcastle Chronicle), which suggests that the Magpies are interested in Anderlecht defender Kara Mbodji.

The 28-year-old made the move to the Belgian giants back in 2015 after a two-year spell with Genk, and has since played a key part in helping the club win the domestic title last season, as well as the Belgian Super Cup.

The Senegal international has played 91 games for the side of which 36 came last term in their run to the Belgian First Division crown, and his fine displays in the heart of the Anderlecht backline have reportedly attracted the attention of several teams in England.

And reports suggest that the Magpies have indeed spoken with Mbodji’s agent about a possible move to St James’ Park, although it is thought that other Premier League sides have also been in contact with the player’s representatives.

Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether Mbodji does indeed leave Anderlecht in January.

Landlord’s verdict: Much was made of Newcastle United’s struggles to land top transfer targets over the summer, with manager Rafa Benitez himself conveying his frustration on occasion.

As such, the Magpies appear to be busy preparing for a more optimistic and fruitful window in January, and one man they are reportedly interested in is Anderlecht centre-back Kara Mbodji, who has impressed at the heart of their backline since moving there in 2015.

And Newcastle are one of several sides reportedly having spoken with the player’s agent about a possible move, but with many other clubs also thought to have done the same, Mbodji’s future is far from certain.
