Talks opened: Man City make their move as Guardiola looks to fill key squad gap

Though the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are confident that their side will be able to secure the Premier League title this season, they are still hoping for Pep Guardiola to bring in a few new faces in January. Ever the perfectionist, Guardiola is always looking to improve his team, and according to the Daily Mail, the Man City faithful could very well get their wish.

The Daily Mail reports that Man City have opened talks with West Brom regarding a move for Jonny Evans, with the Northern Irishman expected to cost around £20 million. Guardiola, it is said, is keen to fill what is seen as a significant gap in his squad at the back, with the Citizens lacking depth in central defence.

With key players like John Stones and Vincent Kompany both suffering injuries at various points this season, Man City’s depth at the back has been exposed, and so it’s no real surprise that they are keen to sort things out.

Evans, though perhaps not the first choice of most fans, is a relatively risk-free option for them, having already had years of experience in the Premier League and, crucially, having already spent time at a top side in England in Man Utd.

Clearly, Man City’s eye will be firmly on the likes of Alexis Sanchez as they look to tie up a deal for the Chilean, but a move for a player like Evans is just as important.

Landlord’s Verdict

At 30-years-old, it’s now or never for Jonny Evans with regards to finding his way back to the top of the Premier League.

He’d be a valued option at Man City, and when you’re looking to win big trophies, consistent quality is just as important as flair and excitement.

He ticks all the boxes for the club.
