Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week ahead of their side’s clash with Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday, with the Reds aiming to become the first team to beat the Citizens in the league this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds themselves are on an excellent run of 17 matches without defeat, a streak which has moved them above both Arsenal and Tottenham into fourth place in the table, while at the same time booking their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And the Merseyside giants also made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup last week with a 2-1 success over neighbours Everton, thus setting them up perfectly for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s high-flying City on Sunday.
Consequently, there have been many happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which details a potentially significant development in Liverpool’s hopes of landing Naby Keita this month.
The 22-year-old has already secured a permanent move to Anfield but that is not due to take place until the summer, yet Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona at the start of the week appears to have heightened the Reds’ desire to bring the move forward.
And recent reports suggest that the Merseysiders are set to speak to RB Leipzig about the possibility of moving the deal forward, with reports in recent days suggesting that it will take a fee of between ’15 and 20 million euros’ to do just that.
And with the player himself reportedly keen on an early move, this potentially significant development may encourage our resident Liverpool fans, some of whom are concerned at the lack of midfield options following Coutinho’s sale.
Landlord’s verdict: It didn’t take long for Barcelona to get Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window, with Liverpool eventually giving in to an eye-watering £142 million deal.
However, the Brazilian’s departure has left a hole in Jurgen Klopp’s team, yet the Reds are reportedly seeking to bring Naby Keita’s summer move forward to this month in a bid to plug that gap.
And recent reports suggest that ‘talks’ are planned with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in the hope of reaching an agreement, yet the German side have recently suggested that Keita will not be leaving this month.
Yet with the player himself reportedly keen on moving to Anfield come January 31, it remains to be seen whether the Reds can indeed get their man six months earlier than planned.
