The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern argue that David De Gea is Europe’s best goalkeeper. In truth, it’s hard to dispute that claim, with the Spaniard arguably the Red Devil’s most important player.
According to the Mirror, Man Utd chairman Ed Woodward is planning to open talks over a new deal for De Gea, with the Spaniard expected to turn around £250,000-per-week. That’s a significant £60,000 increase on his current £190,000-per-week salary.
It’s no less than he deserves, of course. He has been an ever-present in the Man Utd first team in the Premier League this season, and that’s with good reason. He provides incredible shot-stopping, dominant aerial control and – more recently – excellent leadership. He has quickly turned into one of the world’s best as a result.
At 27-years-old, the Spaniard is entering his prime, and Man Utd clearly want him to enjoy his prime at Old Trafford. Certainly, amongst our resident Red Devils, there is nobody that they would rather have between the sticks.
De Gea had a slow start to life at Old Trafford, but patience has really paid off.
Make no mistake, if Man Utd don’t secure his future, then somebody else will. They need to get an early start even though he already has a bit of time left to run on his current deal.
If they manage to secure this deal, it could go down as one of the most important moves of the year for Man Utd.
