The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have pretty much given up hope of their side challenging for the Premier League title this season. They’re currently way back in 6th place in the English top flight, and with Man City running away with the lead at present, it’s fair to say that it’s going to be very tough for Arsene Wenger.
That being said, their quest to secure a top-four finish is still very much alive – but Arsene Wenger has a big task on his hands. Any signings that he can make this term will serve to make that job easier, and fortunately, according to the Telegraph, the Gunners are edging closer to that end.
The Telegraph reports that Arsenal are in pole position to secure the signing of Premier League defender Jonny Evans, who currently plays for West Brom – whilst a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also still on the cards. Significantly, Arsenal now look to be leading the race for Evans after Man City shifted their transfer focus – meaning that Arsene Wenger could have a clear path to signing the PL veteran, with Dick Law working on getting it done.
Currently playing for West Brom, Evans isn’t a player that will sell lots of shirts, but he is the sort of player that could help transform Arsenal’s first team. In terms of raw quality, the Arsenal defence isn’t looking in its best shape, and Evans would certainly help to improve things. Beyond his leadership at the back, he has proven himself as a very competent defender during his time in the Premier League.
With Arsenal shifting to a formation demanding three central defenders regularly this season, the addition of another option would be a huge help for Arsene Wenger – especially given the struggles of Laurent Koscielny this term.
Our resident Gunners think that Evans would be perfect alongside Shkodran Mustafi at the back.
Evans would be a fantastic signing. West Brom appear open to selling him, and Arsenal need a player of his ilk – and so this is a move that has all the marks of a deal that will occur.
He’s as solid as they come, and as Arsenal look to rebuild and force their way into the top four, that solidity will be absolutely essential.
