The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Jose Mourinho to continue his quest to get the Red Devils back to their best. It has been a few years of transition for the club following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, with nobody yet able to bring the consistency and lethality that was on display for years under the Scotsman.
Under Mourinho, though, things are certainly on their way there, and over the next few years, success is sure to return to Old Trafford.
However, for that success to come, Mourinho can’t afford to lose any top players. In a period of progression, signing players is one thing, but holding onto your best players is arguably more important, and that’s certainly the case at Old Trafford.
Fortunately, then, according to the Telegraph, the Red Devils are looking to do just that. The Telegraph reports that Man Utd have begun talks with goalkeeper David De Gea as they look to extend his stay at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho clearly desperate to keep his number one at the club.
Currently earning £200,000-per-week, De Gea has earnt every penny of his salary over the last few years, having emerged as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers. Though Man Utd have often struggled at the back in recent seasons, the Spaniard has often been the saviour – quickly making him a fan favourite amongst our resident Red Devils.
It’s fair to say that he would likely get a pretty sizeable salary increase as a reward for his fine form and for signing on for an extended period, and in an era where clubs are spending huge sums of money unnecessarily – this would be a deal that most fans will be able to unanimously agree is a good one.
De Gea’s prospective new deal is so important for the Red Devils.
The sooner they get this done the better, and so it’s good news that talks have already begun and are well underway.
Whilst big-name signings often take the spotlight, having De Gea at the club long-term will be every bit as important as a new big name recruit.
