Liverpool supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team bow out of the FA Cup on Saturday courtesy of a surprise 3-2 defeat at home to fellow Premier League outfit West Brom.
Jurgen Klopp’s men earned their place in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competition after beating Merseyside rivals Everton in the previous round, and would have had high hopes of putting a cup run together and potentially ending their wait 12-year wait for the title come May. However, the Reds exited at the fourth round stage for the third successive season as a brace from Jay Rodriguez and a Joel Matip own goal set Alan Pardew’s side on their way to a deserved victory, thus all but ending Liverpool’s hopes of winning some silverware this term.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from RMC Sport (via The Daily Mail), which details comments from Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta regarding his side’s pursuit of Emre Can.
The 24-year-old’s future has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his contract expires in the summer, and as of yet no extension has been agreed to keep him at Anfield.
And Serie A champions Juve are one side reportedly keen on exploiting that situation, but don’t look like doing so this month despite heavy interest in the Germany international.
However, Marotta appears confident that his team can do a deal to bring Can to Turin in the summer, saying: ‘We are in optimum position to achieve all the objectives we have set out.
‘Talks are well underway with Emre Can, but the negotiations are not at all concluded.’
And these comments are sure unlikely to delight Klopp or indeed our resident Reds fans, with it increasingly likely that Can will leave the Merseyside giants come the summer.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that Emre Can would likely see out the end of his contract at Anfield, thus throwing into doubt whether the 24-year-old will pen an extension at the Merseyside club.
And Serie A champions Juventus are waiting in the wings in case such eventuality, which appears to be seemingly inevitable, takes place come the summer, with the club’s chief executive Giuseppe Marotta confirming that talks were ‘underway’ with the midfielder over a possible deal.
He did however warn that a deal was far from done, although it does appear that Can will indeed be on his way out of Liverpool in the summer in news which is unlikely to thrill Klopp and our resident Liverpudlians.
