With no international football or European club competition fixtures scheduled until next year we’re now entering a crucial part of the domestic season, one here in the Transfer Tavern we cannot wait for!
Suitably it’s nearly Christmas because we’ve got an absolute gift of a Premier League campaign going on this year with plenty happening at both ends of the table.
One of the tightest title races in years as well as a huge battle at the bottom of the league promises to excite over the coming weeks and months towards May but more imminently, we’ve some early festive season crackers this weekend.
It’s time, then, for our latest look at what’s on the TVs around the Transfer Tavern this weekend as well as the verdict from our man in the know – the landlord.
Saturday: Watford v Everton Sky Sports 1 12:30
This has the potential to be one of those games that surprises many with its quality. Whilst neither side will be at either ends of the table this year it should be an end-to-end affair with both looking at the top seven and European football.
Everton have been poor in recent weeks and look a shadow of the side from the start of the season whilst the Hornets have been decent this year, despite losing last weekend at West Brom.
They’ll fancy a win here, too, and our Watford fans here by the bar are certainly confident of such an eventuality with our landlord agreeing – he’s going 2-1 to the men in yellow.
Saturday: Leicester City v Manchester City BT Sport 1 17:30
The Foxes need to get going this season quickly because otherwise it could get very embarrassing. They are nowhere near the levels they were at last year and will have their work cut out against a wounded City side from last weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s men were humbled by Chelsea at the Etihad last time out and need to bounce back with a win here but will have to do so without Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho who lost the plot towards the end of that defeat.
The champions need to try and use those absentees to their advantage but our landlord cannot see it at all. He’s going 2-0 to City leaving the men from the King Power in the mire.
Sunday: Chelsea v West Brom BT Sport 1 12:00
Chelsea could make it nine wins on the bounce with a victory against West Brom but if there’s one side that might fancy their chances of an upset – it could just be the Baggies.
Indeed, our resident supporters of the Midlands club have been very vocal about their chances already this week. One said: “I think we can get a draw at least. We’re solid at the back as ever but now we have a good threat going forward and so if Chelsea underestimate us, we could do something special.”
Our landlord admits that he too wouldn’t be at all surprised by a draw for West Brom but still doesn’t think it will happen. Chelsea are looking too good at the moment and so he’s going 3-1 to the Blues.
Sunday: Man United v Tottenham Sky Sports 1 14:15
This is the biggest game of the weekend and one we’re all looking forward to here in the Transfer Tavern.
United once again drew last weekend at Everton when they should have won whilst Spurs battered Swansea 5-0 and will have their tails up ahead of kick-off.
This was the kind of game a few years ago Spurs fans here by the bar couldn’t see a result being got from but now they are confident, testament to both side’s reversal in fortunes.
Our landlord agrees and it going for an entertaining 3-2 victory for the away side.
Sunday: Liverpool v West Ham Sky Sports 1 16:30
The final game on Sunday sees Liverpool take on West Ham with both sides losing last weekend.
The Reds fell apart to Bournemouth much to the sheer embarrassment of their fans here in the Transfer Tavern whilst the men from east London were taken to the cleaners by Arsenal.
It’s a tough game that our resident Irons fans are not looking forward to at all with Liverpool set to try and bounce back and our landlord can only see one thing – a convincing home win.
He’s going 3-0 to the Anfield side.
