It’s almost time for another weekend of Premier League football here in the Transfer Tavern and there’s some truly great games for our punters to look forward to watching on our TV’s around the bar.
The top four are all in action in front of the cameras as the fixture list has thrown up a clash between two title rivals, a London derby and a tie between two sides that are looking to get their seasons into full swing.
It’s set to be a top couple of days, then, and so here’s the preview of what’s to come…
Saturday: Manchester City v Chelsea 12:30 Sky Sports 1
The opening fixture of the weekend and the one that we are looking forward to most sees 3rd place Manchester City take on league leaders Chelsea at the Etihad. Only a point separates the two in what looks to be shaping up as a classic title race and they’ll both be looking for a crucial three points in their bids for the crown.
Chelsea saw off Tottenham last weekend thanks to goals from Pedro and Victor Moses but were caught napping in the first half and so if City can get at them early, they could win out.
The Citizens beat Burnley last Saturday and our resident City fans are feeling confident: “This is the moment where we show our class,” one said. “Chelsea have been good but I think we’ll just have too much for them this weekend.”
Our landlord isn’t so sure, though, and is sitting firmly on the fence with a 1-1 draw.
Saturday: West Ham v Arsenal 17:30 BT Sport 1
Another London derby takes place this weekend as West Ham host Arsenal at the London Stadium.
It’s been a pretty woeful season so far for the Hammers whilst the men from the north of the capital have started to stumble slightly in recent weeks.
It’s going to be a test of both team’s spirit then as the men in claret and blue try to pull away from the bottom three after a good draw at Old Trafford whilst the Gunners know they can close the gap at the top significantly with a win.
It’ll be keenly fought but our local Arsenal punters are convinced that now November is over they’ll get back to winning ways.
Our landlord sees a victory for the Gunners too and is going 2-0.
Sunday: Bournemouth v Liverpool 13:30 Sky Sports 1
With City, Chelsea and Arsenal all playing on Saturday Liverpool will know exactly what they need to do in terms of the title race.
Undoubtedly, they’ll still be looking to win at the Vitality Stadium but you can bet they’ll have at least one eye on proceedings this Saturday.
Bournemouth are coming into this one on the back of a loss at the Emirates last time out and will be looking to bounce back against a team without Philippe Coutinho.
We heard our Cherries fans citing that as a potential advantage, too, but our landlord doesn’t think it’ll be enough.
He’s going 2-1 to the Reds.
Sunday: Everton v Manchester United 16:00 Sky Sports 1
The last televised game over the weekend sees Everton host Manchester United in a fixture that usually serves up a classic.
The two teams are both looking to get their seasons up and running with the Toffees seeing their good early form this year completely leave them whilst the Red Devils have also flattered to deceive.
A win could be crucial to both club’s fortunes this year, then, so expect a hotly contested match in a which a point is likely to do neither side a favour.
Our Red Devils here by the bar agree with that saying: “We need to win this if we want to stay in touch with the title race. A point simply won’t do at this stage!”
Our landlord thinks both sets of fans will be disappointed, though, and is going with a 1-1 draw between the pair.
