Blackburn and Everton are set to launch bids for Steven Taylor following Newcastle United‘s decision to place the defender on the transfer list after failing to reach a new contract with the North East club.
It is understood that the club would not meet the wage demands of the player who was looking for £60,000 a week. The summer prompted much speculation of the defender leaving Tyneside after a bust-up in training with team mate Andy Carroll causing division in the squad. Despite this, Taylor was expected to play a big part of the Toon’s Premier League campaign before picking up a shoulder injury in pre-season.
After Newcastle’s mid-week cup win against Accrington Stanley, Magpies boss Chris Hughton expressed his desire to keep the 24-year-old at the ‘Sportsdirect.com@St. James’ Park’ stadium:
“I think there are always going to be things that test us and there will always be other issues, but the important thing is that Steven is a player we would like to see at this football club.
“He is a very good player and certainly I hope an agreement can be made.”
Feelings from the NUFC-forum.com are mixed, but most are in support of the clubs decision not to give into Taylor’s demands.
