Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side kick off 2018 with a narrow win over Burnley, thus setting them up perfectly for this evening’s Merseyside derby with Everton in the FA Cup.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their opening game of the New Year off the back of successive wins over Swansea City and Leicester City, results which took their unbeaten Premier League streak to 12 matches. And they were made to work extremely hard to record number 13 on Monday with a Ragnar Klavan header in the 94th minute needed to see off Sean Dyche’s side, who moments earlier had cancelled out Sadio Mane’s wonderful first half opener through Johann Gudmundsson.
Thus, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Star, which details quotes from Schalke’s sporting executive Christian Heidel regarding the future of midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The 22-year-old has been subject of speculation for a while now given his contract expires at the German club in the summer, with many top European clubs including Liverpool reportedly interested in landing the talented midfielder.
Yet it looked as though Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich were in pole position to sign the Germany international, although tensions appear to have heightened between them and Schalke given their public interest in the 23-year-old.
And Heidel has conveyed their displeasure, saying: ‘We do not want any unrest at Schalke.
‘Bayern insist Leon is a Schalke player but still talk about a Schalke player more than they do any of their own.
‘As a result, they [the transfer rumours] are fuelled again and again. We do not have to hear every day from the people of Munich how good the player is!’
And these comments could give Liverpool and manager Klopp a potential boost in their pursuit of Goretzka, with Schalke clearly angry and disappointed with the way Bayern have gone about their pursuit of the midfielder, and as such they may not be willing to do a deal with their German rivals.
Landlord’s verdict: Leon Goretzka’s future at Schalke has been dominating the headlines for a while now, given that his contract is up at the end of the season and no extension looks like being agreed.
Liverpool are one side reportedly interested in landing the 23-year-old, as are Bayern Munich, yet the latter’s public interest in the midfielder appears to have angered Goretzka’s current employers, and plausibly thrown into doubt their willingness to do a deal with them.
As such, Jurgen Klopp may well have received a boost in his pursuit of the Germany international, but only time will tell whether it’s a deal he and his side can strike up.
