Southampton fans here in the Tavern are praying that their side can avoid relegation to the Championship, as they continue to fight for their life in the Premier League.
Interestingly, the Saints managed to secure all three points in their last Premier League outing, as Mark Hughes’ side inflicted a 2-1 defeat on a struggling Bournemouth side.
However, Southampton will travel to Goodison Park to face an in form Everton side later on today, with anything less than three points being seen as a disaster by many of our local residents. And, with Swansea City to come in their penultimate Premier League fixture, Mark Hughes would love to head into that season-defining game with three points already under his belt.
Therefore, Hughes should look to make one change prior to kick-off against the Toffees, with Wesley Hoedt being dropped from the side to rule out any silly mistakes being made. Indeed, the Dutchman made a catalogue of errors, his passing was wayward and his clearances were as suspect as ever in their last outing against Bournemouth.
With that in mind, Mark Hughes should think about dropping Hoedt and giving Jack Stephens a place in the starting XI. Here’s who our local punters think should get the nod…
Southampton will need to be at their best against Sam Allardyce’s Everton side if they want to come away with anything, so perhaps a defensive change will do the trick after last weekend’s nervy performance.
The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the most promising players at the club in the current campaign, but not even he has been able to halt the slide that Southampton have been on.
However, Mark Hughes may think about inserting him into the starting lineup after witnessing a couple of horror performances from Wesley Hoedt, as the Englishman has always been able to ensure consistency during his 28 appearances in the side so far this season.
