Manchester City will face stark competition from the likes of ChelseaFC when it comes to the proposed acquisition of Napoli’s Edinson Cavani – nicknamed El Matador.
The Napoli forward has been the name on many lips over the past 18 months after watching the 24 year old smash in 30 league goals in little over 40 appearances. Manchester City have already had the pleasure of facing the six footer in their Champions League clash and it is believed they shall be watching the striker a little more closely than usual during the next match.
Chelsea on the other hand have been interested in the Uruguayan for some time but would not make a move during the summer until a manager had been brought in. By the time Villas Boas has arrived interest had moved on to trying to keep the squad intact and with Didier Drogba still looking for an extension, the Chelsea manager was happy with the strike force at the time.
Now though he shall be considering a new striker for next summer, with Drogba likely to be allowed to join Marseille and Anelka also likely to depart. With Lukaku considered a little rusty for the Premier League at his age, Chelsea are keen to add another striker with attacking prowess and Cavani, it appears, ticks all the boxes.
Competition for his signature will be fierce though even if Napoli do decide to sell and with figures last summer ranging from anything from £35m to £50m, Manchester City would be deemed favourites in the monetary department. City also have Carlos Tevez in their arsenal too and although it would appear more likely that he will be heading to Real Madrid, his departure will leave a gap in the squad.
Although Cavani would find it much more difficult to claim a place with the Manchester City starting eleven, with the likes of Dzecko, Aguerro and Balotelli, a partnership of Cavani and Torres should have many groups of fans licking their lips at the prospect.
