Alan Pardew looks keen to build on a Newcastle side that finished fifth last season and according to the Sun his principal target is Dutchman Douglas Texeira.
The Magpies were impressive last year in a season that saw them qualify for the Europa League, with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse rejuvenating a front line that had diminished since the loss of Andy Carroll. Yet despite Pardew’s attempts to re-sign their former number 9, Texeira now looks to be top of the wanted list as Newcastle aim to improve a defence that let in 51 goals last campaign – the most in the top 8.
Newcastle have made a £4million bid for the Dutch defender yet they could face some competition. The Sun also states that Aston Villa are interested in the 24-year-old with Paul Lambert keen to strengthen the back four as he heads into his first campaign as Villa manager.
There is some doubt as to whether Texeira will actually leave Twente this summer. The Dutchman is said to be keen to continue playing under Steve McCLaren in an effort to gain another contract with the club. Yet with one year left on his deal, Twente may not risk losing the player for nothing in a year if they can sell him this summer.
So let’s supposed Douglas is definitely on the move. Where would be the best place for the 24-year-old who is widely considered as the best defender in the Eredivise? Well in my mind a move to St James Park makes more sense and is more likely than him joining Aston Villa
With the arrival of new manager Paul Lambert, Villa are very much going through a transformation process. The former Norwich boss has a lot of work to do if he is to prevent his side from being relegated next season, a fate they only narrowly escaped last year.
In contrast, Alan Pardew has established a successful style of football on Tyneside. Texeira may prefer to enter into a system that has already proved its success as opposed to opting for a club that’s still trying to find its identity under Lambert.
In addition, Douglas Texeira is leaving a side in Twente that has qualified for the Europa League and is used to competing at the top end of the Eredivise, thanks in large part to Steve McClaren. Joining Newcastle would place Texeira in a very similar situation in the Premier League – the Magpies are in the qualifying round of the Europa League and are sure to challenge for a Champions League spot this year.
For me Newcastle would surely be the more attractive destination. Texeira would continue to play in European competition whilst joining a side that will fight for a top four finish next season. At the moment Aston Villa are not in the same position to compete with Alan Pardew’s side if they get into a head to head battle.
Paul Lambert will have a big task on his hands if he’s to lure the Dutchman away from St James Park this summer.
