‘That’s the run over’ – Newcastle fans react to recent matchday announcement

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are currently in their best vein of form that they’ve found all season. Rafa Benitez side have won their last four games after dispatching Arsenal 2-1 at St James Park on Sunday.

The fans, though, have lost confidence for their next fixture against Everton at Goodison Park after their club announced via the Twitter, with a link to the Newcastle website, that Bobby Madley is to referee the fixture.

Bobby Madley has unfortunately picked up a negative reputation as a match official in the Premier League. This season alone, Madley has refereed 17 Premier League games, sending off just two players and giving three penalties in that time.

Whilst the standard of refereeing in the Premier League is higher than it is in a number of Europe’s other top leagues, Madley is one of the officials who comes in for a lot of stick when handed the whistle for the big occasions.

The last time Madley took charge of a Newcastle fixture was back in February 2017 when the Magpies beat Brighton 2-1 at The Amex Stadium as they marched towards promotion for the Premier League.

You can read the Newcastle fas reaction to Madley’s appointment here. Unfortunately for him, it’s overwhelmingly negative.
