There’s a busy summer ahead for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United at Old Trafford, who’s supporters want to see an increased emphasis on the league next season.
The Red Devils supporters lining the bar here in the pub were delighted with the success in the Europa League and Carling Cup last time out but their lowly league placing caused some concern.
Of course, they qualified for the Champions League thanks to a convincing win over Ajax in the Europa League final last month but it was a game that had it gone wrong, would have left United facing the prospect of another season playing in Europe’s second-string competition.
But moving forward, it’s important the right players are brought in over the summer months but there’s one individual who continues to divide the United fans here in the tavern.
The individual in question? £25m-rated striker Anthony Martial, who’s future at the club remains unclear.
As far as the player and his agent are concerned, he’s at United for the foreseeable future but a slow campaign last time out meant he dropped down the pecking order and struggled for regular minutes- understandable after the strong form shown by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Frenchman shone in his first season in England but faced that dreaded second-season syndrome, where he struggled to really make an impact in the first-team. Much of that came down to match-time but he’s a player that showed on many occasions a couple of years ago, that he’s a force to be reckoned with and should have been hitting those heights more regularly during the last campaign.
A strong pre-season is key for the former Monaco man if he’s to continue his development at Old Trafford and he’ll know that more than anyone. Get that right and he’ll be at the forefront of Mourinho’s thoughts going into the 2017/18 campaign.
A slow start would be disastrous.
