The 5 ‘Frees’ That Mancini Should Consider This Summer

Roberto Mancini has spent over £200 million assembling a squad that may still miss out on the Premier League this year.

In the off chance that City have a conservative summer, here are five players  worth looking at who could be picked up for free at the end of the season.

 Walter Samuel (Inter Milan)

The Argentina international has enjoyed an illustrious career playing for Boca Juniors, AS Roma and Real Madrid before moving to current club Inter.

The 6’4 centre-back may leave the San Siro this season after a dreadful year for the Nerazzurri.

At 33 years of age, Samuel is no spring chicken. But surely City fans would rather see him sitting on the bench than the blundering Stefan Savic.

 Tranquillo Barnetta (Bayer Leverkusen)

The Swiss midfielder has endured an injury nightmare this season having failed to make a single appearance for his side.

At just 26 years old, Barnetta still has many years ahead of him and there is no question when fit and on form, this guy is a quality player.

The name will be familiar to English fans already, with the winger scoring twice at Wembley as Switzerland drew 2-2 with England in June 2011.

 Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)

Italy international Montolivo has been frequently linked with moves away from Fiorentina, but it looks like he will finally leave the club he has spent seven years at this summer.

Montolivo is an extremely talented defensive midfielder, similar to Andrea Pirlo but obviously not as good.

Mancini could make a late move for the former Atalanta player, but it seems certain that Montolivo will join AC Milan.

 Junior Hoilett (Blackburn Rovers)

Where Hoilett will be playing his football next season is anyone’s guess, although I’m confident in saying it won’t be at Ewood Park.

The tricky midfielder has been one of the few shining lights at Blackburn this season, his five goals and five assists in the Premier League have helped Blackburn climb out of the relegation zone.

If Mancini does decide to make a move for the 23 year-old, he may face stiff competition from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool.

 Mark van Bommel (AC Milan)

Mancini expressed interest in the Dutch veteran last summer, although the former Barcelona enforcer opted for a move to the San Siro in the end.

The 34 year-olds future at Milan is unclear, PSV would welcome him with open arms but I feel he still has another season in him at the highest level after an impressive season with the Rossoneri.
