The addition of Wanyama would transform West Ham’s midfield

Over the summer, West Ham bolstered their attack significantly with the signings of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko with the pair having really flourished in recent weeks after a slow start to the season.

However, the same cannot be said about the Hammers’ midfield additions with Jack Wilshere not particularly impressing before his injury while Carlos Sanchez — an absolutely baffling acquisition in truth — has been poor in the cameos he has made for the club thus far.

As a result, manager Manuel Pellegrini could now move for a new midfielder when the January transfer window opens.

The Breakdown

According to Football Insider, the West Ham boss is interested in bringing in Victor Wanyama from rivals Tottenham in a move that could be massive for the east London club.

With Wilshere injured and Sanchez having struggled at the London Stadium since arriving from Fiorentina back in August, Declan Rice has come into the starting XI and has impressed in his defence-shielding role.

The West Ham youngster’s future at the club, though, is uncertain with his contract set to expire next summer while the Hammers in general look quite weak in the defensive midfield position.

With that in mind, £27m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Wanyama would be the ideal signing in January. When fit, the 27-year-old is one of the most efficient ball-winning midfielders in the Premier League. His possible addition to West Ham in the middle of the park would truly make them a more solid outfit.

The growing animosity between West Ham and Tottenham could provide a stumbling block in any potential negotiations for Wanyama, but the east London club would be foolish not to try their luck.
