With the transfer window now officially open, money bags Paris Saint Germain could be lining up a surprise swoop on the Premier League.
Having lost out to Montpellier in the race for the Ligue 1 title, PSG have set about targeting stars of European football to spearhead their assault on the French football summit. They have already signed Napoli forward Ezequiel Lavezzi but failed in a bid for AC Milan defender Thiago Silva.
So instead of Silva, they are targeting some new defenders and The Daily Mail are reporting that Chelsea defender John Terry is on their shortlist, with an £8m bid believed to be in the pipeline. The current Paris Saint-Germain manager is Terry’s ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti and with Diego Lugano strongly linked with a move to River Plate, Ancelotti is looking for a proven centre back and Terry certainly fits the bill.
Whilst PSG will have no trouble affording Terry’s reported £160,000 a week wages, I find it unlikely that Terry will leave the Champions League winners as he has been the cornerstone of Roberto di Matteo’s success at Chelsea. Whilst Terry will surely have a lot of time and respect for Ancelotti, a move for him right now wouldn’t be wise.
Meanwhile, the Stamford Bridge club have been linked with a swoop for Arsenal speedster Theo Walcott. Walcott has just one year to go on his current Arsenal contract and it has alerted Chelsea, who have been actively seeking attacking reinforcements all summer.
However, with Eden Hazard and Marko Marin already signed up for next season, I doubt Chelsea will really made a concerted push for Walcott, nor do I think Arsenal will sell him.
