The Eddie Howe trait which could be holding Bournemouth from further success

Bournemouth fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are happy with the signings so far, but they’re expecting a few more before the window closes.

Two seasons ago, our landlord found himself getting extremely bored of hearing all about ‘the Bournemouth fairy tale’ which saw the south coast club go from the brink of dropping out of the Football League, to making it all the way to the top flight of English football.

It got boring after a while; however, a ninth-place finish last season shows that Eddie Howe’s men are not only aiming to stay in the Premier League, but to keep on climbing up the table too.

Despite heading into their third season in the Premier League, Eddie Howe continues to show far too much loyalty to the men that got them there. Understandably, they deserved their chance in the club’s first top-flight season, in the second season maybe just to see what they can do, but now? Not so much.

If Bournemouth are looking to improve on their position last season then former League One players are not going to be able to get the job done.

Loyalty is a great quality to have in a manager, but knowing when to drop players down to the bench or even look to cash in on them whilst you still can, is an even better quality.

Players like Steve Cook, Dan Gosling, Simon Francis aren’t good enough to be getting Bournemouth anything more than ninth place.

Steve Cook alone made too many school boy errors last season that cost The Cherries precious points.

It’s hard to say because what they have done is such an incredible achievement, but Howe needs to push on now if he wants to see continued success in the league and in the domestic cups.

Signing players like Asmir Begovic and Nathan Ake is showing that Howe is beginning to phase these players out but the young manager needs to remember that he is their boss first and friend second.

Keep them at the squad and let them fight for their place by all means, but start bringing in more higher quality players if you really want to make Bournemouth a force in England.
