Iceman Eidur Gudjohnsen is on the verge of joining West Ham United for free after completing a medical on Tuesday night. According to the Daily Mail the Monaco forward will be a West Ham player by the time you’ve buttered your toast after the Ligue 1 side agreed to let him leave for nothing. He will join Benni McCarthy at Upton Park as the Hammers stage a late raid on the transfer market to boost their fire power, with plastic haired matinee idol-lite David Bentley also in their sights.
The Irons beat out Tottenham in the race to sign the Icelandic international with Harry Redknapp admitting he’d spoken to his agent, whilst again displaying his crafty inside knowledge of Premiership dealings;
“I like Eidur and I’ve spoken to his agent.” Said ‘Arry “He’s a good footballer I thought he was going to West Ham but I left it with my chairman. He would be a good loan signing.”
Gudjohnsen, 31. will likely enjoy a good relationship with Hammers boss little Gianfranco Zola, whom he played alongside for 3 years at Chelsea in the early noughties. The former Barcelona star, a European Cup winner with the Catalan club last year as well as a double Premier League title winner at the Bridge, will join Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy at the Boleyn, who’ll join for a fee in the region of £.2.25m. But Zola may not be finished yet, with intentions on Spurs midfielder Bentley to round off a frantic few days trading for the East End clubs new owners Davids Gold and Sullivan. If all goes to plan, it’ll be a bit of wheeler dealing worthy of Sullivan’s namesake John’s most loved creation, Only Fools and Horses. Though for West Ham, hopefully with less comic results.
