Relegation is never a simple thing. There seems to be twists and turns every season as to who will be waving goodbye to the Premiership come May. We know Portsmouth are down, I believe Burnley will be joining them (they don’t look like earning a point at the moment) so it leaves one more team to face the deadly drop.
The contenders seem to be Bolton, Wigan, Hull and West Ham. Today I’ll be focusing on the latter’s run-in and seeing where they will win and lose points. Here we go then…
Saturday, 10th April – Sunderland (H): After earning a creditable draw at Everton, this game provides West Ham with the perfect opportunity to get a win. Sunderland will be dangerous opposition- they are safe and have nothing to play for. However, I believe the result at Goodison Park will have lifted the home team’s spirits.
Prediction: West Ham win
Monday, 19th April – Liverpool (A): Not exactly the type of team you want to go and face when you’re trying to survive in the league is it? For all of Liverpool’s troubles this season, Anfield is one of the toughest places in the division to get a result at. It will be interesting to see how Gianfranco Zola approaches the game here but the Reds will fancy their chances.
Prediction: Liverpool win
Saturday, 24th April – Wigan (H): You know that thing about a match being a six-pointer? Well, this is the one. A victory here for either side could be crucial as to where they will be playing their football next season. Upton Park will need to have one of its best atmospheres and I can see both teams scoring at least once. Wigan are unpredictable and if the Hammers attack from the beginning it will give them a real chance of three precious points.
Prediction: West Ham win
Saturday, 1st May – Fulham (A): I think a lot will depend on whether Fulham are still in the Europa League when this fixture comes around. They also fall in to the category of a team who are safe, but have had a tremendous season. Nonetheless, Roy Hodgson will ensure that West Ham are in for a difficult afternoon but the Hammers will be spurred on from the result the week before and will come away from Craven Cottage with something.
Sunday, 9th May – Manchester City (H): Zola will be happy with the fact that the final game is at home and the West Ham faithful will need to fully get behind the players. City, on the other hand, come to Upton Park knowing that they might be in with a huge chance of finishing fourth should they win this match. Expect drama along with goals for both sides. Whether the Hammers are safe or not by this time remains to be seen, but I think City’s quality of attacking players will be shown in the end result.
Prediction: City win
Total points after 38 games – 35. West Ham currently have 28 points and seven more points from their final five games might be enough. If other results go their way, along with their own victories, then the east London club has a real chance of finishing 17th.
