Paul Gascoigne is to become the manager of Evo-Stik First Division North club Garforth Town. Garforth’s owner Simon Clifford has said: “This is not a publicity stunt.”
But it is isn’t it? Who in their right mind would want Gazza as manager of their football club? He’s limited coaching experience and, without wanting to be cruel, is off his cake. The only thing having Gazza as manager of your club will bring is a bit of money. Attendances will increase as the locals will want to catch a glimpse of one of England’s finest ever footballers, and the media will show interest in a club they couldn’t care less about just to follow the Gascoigne train wreck.
I mean, up until this morning I’d never heard of Garforth Town and here I am writing about them.
Paul Gascoigne has had a rocky ride since retiring from football. He’s suffered from alcoholism, depression, OCD, bulimia and mental illness. He was dropped from I’m A Celebrity…for failing a psychiatric test. Just how mad do you have to be to not be allowed on that programme? He’s a troubled man and he shouldn’t be running a football team (at any level) day to day.
An interesting fact for you however, did you know that in 2004 Lee Sharpe was part of the Garforth Town squad. Also, and this is quite unbelievable, Socrates played one match for the club in the same year at the age of fifty. Clifford has some links with Brazilian football apparently so that’s how it came about.
Gazza needs serious help getting his head together and personally I think it’s disgusting that anyone would employ him just to make a quick buck.
I’ll give it six weeks before he’s been sacked for some sort of controversial incident.
