As the temperature drops to near freezing, you may have noticed certain Premiership players now starting to wear a piece of headgear. But what is it? And why do they wear it?
The piece of equipment – called a snood – is believe it or not, not a fashion accessory but actually helps make you a better player. The thermal energy saved in heat retention can be directly converted into better performances and goals and can even help attract the attention of top managers, as shown by Arsene Wenger acquiring Maroune Chamakh and Alex Ferguson trying to buy Ashley Young.
Plus, it keeps your neck warm. I wonder if Nike do them little mittens with bits of string so Chamakh and Young can get a pair but not lose them?
As featured on Saturday’s Match of the Day, although the latest in ‘necktology’ didn’t receive ringing endorsements from Lineker, Shearer or Lawrenson, but that probably adds to their value.
