Liverpool

The Player Ratings – Manchester United vs. Liverpool

United

Edwin van der Sar – Not a lot to do, other than the goals that he could have done little about a steady performance from the old relic. 7/10

John O’Shea – Kept Joe Cole quiet most of the game but a needless challenge on Torres to set up Liverpool’s second goal. 6/10

Nemanja Vidic – His usual solid, commanding self. Won is battle with Torres this time. 8/10

Jonny Evans – A rash challenge on Torres to give Liverpool a penalty, otherwise steady. 6/10

Patrice Evra – Not one of his more impressive games but did nothing wrong. 7/10

Nani – Gave Konchesky a tough time. Put some decent crosses in and was unlucky not to score with a thunderous shot that hit the post. 7/10

Paul Scholes – Did his job well, controlled the midfield and spread the ball well. 7/10

Darren Fletcher – Got forward well and ran his legs off. Played a superb pass for Nani to set up Berbatov for his second. Split from the wall allowing Gerrard’s free kick to go in. 6/10

Ryan Giggs – Was tricky on the ball and gave Glen Johnson one of his tougher games before being substituted feeling sick. 7/10

Wayne Rooney – Subdued and shouldn’t have been playing. Uncharacteristically lost the ball a lot and had little impact, though he put in a good shift as you would expect. His private life seems to be affecting his game. 5/10

Dimitar Berbatov – Starting to show why United paid £30m for him. A good all round performance and a hat-trick. His second goal will be a contender for goal of the season. 9/10

Liverpool

Jose Reina – Had a busy afternoon. Conceded three but can’t really be blamed for any of them. 6/10

Glen Johnson – Did OK against Giggs and looked good going forward. One of Liverpool’s better performers. 6/10

Jamie Carragher – Steady as usual though he shouldn’t have been beaten in the air by Berbatov for United’s winner. 5/10

Martin Skrtel – Did a decent enough job, handled a subdued Rooney well. 6/10

Paul Konchesky – Had a tough time against Nani and failed to deliver when getting forward. 5/10

Maxi Rodriguez – Very little impact, hardly touched the ball and may as well been sat in the crowd. 4/10

Steven Gerrard – Scored two set pieces but didn’t run the show as he has done in the past. Most notable contribution was kissing the camera again after scoring the free kick. 7/10

Christian Poulsen – Broke up some of United’s play well but offered little going forward. 6/10

Joe Cole – A few neat touches but still settling in at his new club. 6/10

Raul Meireles – Similar to Cole, still trying to gel with his new teammates but did little wrong. 6/10

Fernando Torres – Not firing on all cylinders. Won the set pieces for Liverpool’s goals but struggled on his own up front. 6/10
