The Premiership Ménage à Trois That Will End In Tears …For Two

The young talented footballer, a beast motivated primarily by greed and money if you believe all you read but one man is about to unwittingly break that mold.

Eden Hazard may be demanding a massive £4.6 million a year, after tax.

While his agent is also demanding an astonishing £6 million from any club his prized asset signs for according to The Telegraph. What makes Hazard different is that three of the Premiership’s biggest and best are all willing to meet these incredible wage demands and have reached an agreement with Lille regarding a fee for the Belgian international.

This leaves Hazard not having to opt for the club willing to pay the highest wages but rather the side best placed to offer future success.

Premiership champions Manchester City, European Champions Chelsea and England’s all time league title record holders Manchester United are all believed to have had bids in the region of £32 million accepted and have agreed personal terms according to Sky Sports News.

Hazard, therefore, is in the position of power and with money no longer being the major issue his decision is likely to be based on where he perceives England’s balance of power to lie.

The last player to be placed in a vaguely similar position was the at the time Blackburn player Phil Jones. The clubs constituting the league’s top four at the time were all know to be interested in Jones and the player ultimately opted to join Champions Manchester United. At the time Manchester City were yet to pose a real threat to any club challenging for the title, never mind actually win it, and Chelsea still lacked the European cup they craved and their spending power was threatening to dwindle in comparison to cash kings City.

However fast forward to the present day and things are very different. City have now not only ended their trophy drought with an FA Cup success but have also proved themselves to be England’s best team over the course of the last campaign, while Chelsea’s ageing squad finally reached the end goal of the Roman Revolution with a European cup triumph. United did push City all the way but ultimately finished trophy-less.

Hazard himself has claimed that he will go to a club dependant on the position he will be played in and the amount of playing time he will receive. This leaves Hazard with an interesting dilemma. City appear to be England’s top dogs but have the biggest squad and therefore may offer the Lille player the least playing time. Chelsea are fresh from winning Europe’s top prize but several members of the Champions League winning team have already been released and others could follow highlighting the club’s realization that the need to lower the average age of the squad still remains. Contrastingly United already have a promising young squad but with Giggs, Scholes, Evra and Ferdiand in the twilight of their career big signings need to be on the horizon if United are to continue challenging.

While one player can not decide the balance of power in the Premiership if Hazard was to choose City after the publicity surrounding United and Chelsea’s interest it would validate the Premiership champions standing as England’s new power. While if Hazard was to go to either Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford it would demonstrate either club’s ability to still draw Europe’s top players, proving the belief and determination within the club to finish ahead of City next season.
