Newcastle take on Club Brugge tonight, hoping to extend their lead at the top of Europa League Group D. Alan Pardew’s men have been a mixed bag this season, beating Spurs and Norwich and losing to Man United and Chelsea, but have been playing well in Europe.
Brugges, meanwhile top the Belgian pro league on goal difference from Anderlecht, but have only managed the three points from their opening two games.
The Belgians have a win at home and a loss away on their books, whilst the Toon Army have seen a home win and an away from this season.
Pardew’s men should have too much firepower for the Belgians tonight. With Demba Ba on top form and Fabrico Coloccinni back marshalling the defence, I cannot see beyond a home win tonight. However, if Carlos Bacca, the second highest goalscorer in the Belgian league this season, gets on a roll, then Tim Krul might have a few things to think about.
Odds are good that Newcastle will end tonight on top of Group D as they started, but shouldn’t consider themselves qualified quite just yet.
Prediction: Newcastle 2:0 Club Brugge
