This summer will once again see many clubs cutting loose fringe players or players who have run their course which means club scouts should be alert to the free agents of summer 2012.
With Chelsea seemingly willing to let players such as Drogba, Kalou and Bosingwa leave this summer Mr. Abramovich and whomever he decides to give the Chelsea reigns to next will be looking to replace these players as well as improve the current squad.
With FIFA’s financial fair play rule soon coming into effect, clubs with European ambitions will be looking to tighten the purse strings. There are some good quality players who’s agents will be looking to engineer a move when their current deals expire and here are 5 players who Chelsea could sign on a free to build a squad capable of winning trophies again.
Miguel, Valencia – RB
Miguel is a vastly experienced right back making over 150 appearances for Valencia and being capped over 50 times for his native Portugal. He plays very much as an attacking right back, likened to Maicon of Inter Milan.
With the imminent departure of Jose Bosingwa who has performed so poorly this season and has struggled to set the Chelsea team alight during his time at the Bridge, Miguel would be a perfect replacement despite being 32.
Maynor Figueroa, Wigan – LB
Some Chelsea fans will think what would we want with a left back from Wigan who are seemingly destined for relegation?
Here’s the thing, Chelsea since signing Ashley Cole have never had a capable understudy – although Ryan Bertrand should be given more of a chance – Figueroa has played in the Premier League for many years and has received many plaudits for his performances in a struggling Wigan side. He is strong and powerful, and despite possessing a potent attacking threat like Cole he is certainly a capable defender which is the first job of a left back.
Jefferson Farfan, Schalke – LM/RM
Farfan is a 27 year old winger who was instrumental in Schalke’s run to the Champions League semi-final last season. His pace and trickery are a threat for any defence and costing the club nothing he would be the perfect replacement for Florent Malouda should he or the club decide his future is elsewhere.
Junior Hoilett, Blackburn – LM
At just 21 years of age Blackburn’s Junior Hoilett has been the talk of never ending transfer speculation, he has lit the Premier League up with a string of amazing individual performances. Much like Figueroa he has performed admirably in a struggling side and he may just be the player that guides them to safety.
I’m sure Chelsea fans would love to see a pacey winger who enjoys beating a man and scoring goals playing at the Bridge again. Chelsea will certainly face stiff competition for his signature as he is sure to be the most sought after free agent of this summer.
Hugo Rodallega, Wigan – ST
A target for Tottenham during the January transfer window, Rodallega has enjoyed many successful season at Wigan in terms of goals and despite an under-par season this year still has the potential to be a great Premier League striker. He has pace, aerial ability and quick feet as well as an eye for goal which playing with better players would certainly enhance.
With the departure of Anelka and most likely Drogba, Chelsea will be in need of an under-study to either the returning to form Fernando Torres or any forward which they acquire during the window. Rodallega can also play wide in a front three of just behind the striker and this versatility makes him a great free signing.
