The Tottenham Player Ratings

Spurs away support was as ever immense and it was a pity that the Tottenham players couldn’t muster the same levels of energy. The first half was impressive fare with Gareth Bale being teed up with a very classy cross from Tommy Huddlestone to take the lead with a very powerful and precise long range header.

Spurs continued to dominate but were dogged by errant passing and some incredibly wasteful shots on goal. Spurs had 11 shots of which only 4 were on target. Dempsey scuttled in the second goal which may or may have not gone in of it’s own accord after Defoe under-hit from close range.

Minus Dembele Spurs midfield was basically a Huddlestone/Sandro combo. Tommy’s passing was frequently inspired but he was incredibly static and he contributed close to nothing elsewhere.

The second half was pretty miserable unless you were a Southampton fan. Spurs went from an occasionally slick passing game to hoofing the ball wildly. As a result The Saints took their chance to dominate and the fact they only scored once was quite miraculous.

Spurs need more creativity in midfield and someone who can shoot straight.

Brad Friedel – 6 His kick outs all went to the opposition. Time for Hugo Lloris.

Kyle Walker – 4 An excellent athlete but his defensive qualities are pretty thin.

Steven Caulker – 6 Not outstanding, but very calm, reliable and didn’t make any mistakes.

Jan Vertonghen – 6 A mixed game where he looked sharp early on but faded badly on the hour.

William Gallas – 7 A tough game for the Frenchman who was again let down by Walker too often.

Sandro – 8 He left the field shattered. Largely due to having to carry Tom Huddlestone.

Huddlestone – 6 Questionable fitness levels or mentally he’s just not up to it.

Aaron Lennon – 6 Another game he failed to real impress. He’s trying but not quite achieving.

Gareth Bale – 7 A great first half, but he didn’t involve himself much at all in the second.

Clint Dempsey – 5 A low score for a goalscorer but that’s more or less all he did.

Jermain Defoe – 4 Unbelievably wasteful, frequently offside, quite greedy.

Siggurdson – 4 Looks out of his depth at this level.

Livermore – 4 Gave away several free kicks and generally looked in a daze.
