‘The worst’, ‘Absolutely terrible’ – Tottenham fans ridicule their former £36m-rated midfielder

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern were intrigued by Chelsea’s clash with Barcelona last night for more reasons than one.

After recording a fantastic 2-2 draw in Turin against Juventus last week, the Lilywhites faithful were eager to see how their London-rivals would fare against a similar calibre of opposition at Stamford Bridge last night. Despite struggling for form in the Premier League of late, Chelsea managed to claim a 1-1 draw against the runaway La Liga leaders.

On the balance of play a 1-1 draw was a fair result, but considering Barcelona’s equaliser arrived after a catastrophic error from Andres Christensen, the resident Blues propping up our bar were left with a sour taste in the mouth.

There were plenty of Barcelona players who were worth keeping an eye on last night as the likes of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic graced the turf of Stamford Bridge, but it was the former Tottenham flop Paulinho (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) who the Tottenham supporters paid particularly close attention to.

The 29-year-old Brazilian failed to impress during his two year career with Spurs, and he eventually moved to GZ Evergrande in the Chinese Super League after struggling to make an impact in English football.

A move to China is often seen as a backwards step in footballing terms, but Paulinho surprisingly managed to enhance is reputation in an unlikely environment and earned a transfer to join the Catalan giants in the summer transfer window of 2017.

His move to Barcelona was met with huge surprise by the Spurs fans who were largely underwhelmed by his impact in North-London, so it’s no wonder they were keeping a close eye on their former employee last night.

Although his move to Barcelona might suggest that he has improved since leaving Spurs, the supporters were struggling to see any evidence to make that case last night, and they took to Twitter to slate Paulinho for his lacklustre performance against Chelsea.

Here’s a selection of the reaction to Paulinho’s performance for Barcelona last night…
